Four unions of bank officers had threatened to go on a two-day strike from September 26 to protest against the consolidation of 10 state-run banks into four.
Unions are protesting the merger of state-owned Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with the larger peer Bank of Baroda.
Most bank branches will be open only on 24 December.
