BOSTON - Le suspect des attentats du marathon de Boston tué à l'issue d'une fusillade avec les autorités policières, vendredi matin, avait subi des blessures de la tête aux pieds et ses membres étaient intacts lorsqu'il est arrivé à l'hôpital, a confié l'un des médecins l'ayant traité.
Selon le docteur David Schoenfeld, Tamerlan Tsarnaev était inconscient à son arrivée au Centre médical Beth Israel Deaconess et avait subi des blessures si profondes qu'il n'est pas possible de déterminer lesquelles ont mené à sa mort. Le docteur Schoenfeld a ajouté qu'un coroner devra déterminer la cause du décès.
L'autre suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, reposait dans un état critique dans le même hôpital, samedi, après avoir été capturé en milieu de soirée la vendredi.
Le FBI interdit aux autorités de l'hôpital de dévoiler de plus amples détails sur ses blessures ou son état de santé.
Le docteur Schoenfeld vit à Watertown, en banlieue de Boston, et a entendu les explosions résultant de la fusillade entre les deux frères et la police, tôt vendredi.
Il a appelé l'hôpital pour alerter les membres du personnel qu'ils allaient probablement devoir soigner des gens blessés, avant de se précipiter vers l'établissement pour coordonner les opérations.
«Nous avions trois ou quatre équipes d'aide aux personnes traumatisées dans différentes chambres et qui étaient prêtes», mais ignorant si elles allaient soigner un suspect d'un attentat aux explosifs, des policiers ou des citoyens ordinaires, a relaté le docteur Schoenfeld.
Les vêtements de l'aîné des deux frères avaient été coupés par les intervenants d'urgence sur la scène, de sorte que s'il portait une veste avec des explosifs, ce n'était plus le cas lorsqu'il est arrivé au centre hospitalier, a ajouté le docteur.
«De la tête aux pieds, chaque région de son corps avait subi des blessures», a-t-il précisé. «Ses jambes et ses bras étaient intacts — ils n'avaient pas éclaté en morceaux» — mais il n'avait plus de pouls et il était en situation d'arrêt cardiaque, ce qui signifie que son coeur et sa circulation (sanguine) s'étaient arrêtés. Il a donc fallu procéder à une réanimation cardiopulmonaire.
Après 15 minutes de traitements vains, les médecins ont confirmé son décès.
«Nous avons fait tout ce que nous pouvions» pour essayer de lui sauver la vie, a affirmé le docteur Schoenfeld.
Comment les membres de l'équipe médicale ont-ils réagi à l'idée de traiter le suspect de l'attentat?
«Il y a eu quelques échanges dans la salle d'urgence au sujet de son identité. La discussion a rapidement pris fin», a fait remarquer le docteur Schoenfeld.
«Peu importe qui est la personne. Nous allons lui prodiguer les meilleurs soins possibles.»
