WASHINGTON - Le président américain Barack Obama s'est entretenu de nouveau, vendredi, avec le premier ministre israélien Benyamin Nétanyahou à propos de l'escalade de la violence dans la Bande de Gaza.
Selon la Maison-Blanche, M. Nétanyahou a téléphoné à M. Obama, vendredi, pour lui offrir une mise à jour sur la situation en Israël et à Gaza. Le premier ministre de l'État hébreux a remercié le président Obama et le peuple américain pour les investissements des États-Unis dans le système de défense Dome d'acier contre les missiles et les obus de mortier, système qui a été utilisé pour défendre Israël contre des attaques à la roquette en provenance de Gaza. Les deux leaders avaient déjà discuté du conflit mercredi.
M. Obama, rapporte la Maison-Blanche, a réitéré l'appui américain au droit de se défendre d'Israël, et a exprimé ses regrets à propos des morts civils israéliens et palestiniens.
Des groupes d'activistes ont lancé des attaques à la roquette contre Israël, qui a riposté en tuant le chef militaire du Hamas et en menant des dizaines de frappes aériennes à Gaza.
