René Angélil, qui a lancé la carrière de la chanteuse Céline Dion avant de l'épouser, est mort jeudi matin à l'âge de 73 ans après un "long et courageux combat contre le cancer".

Céline Dion a fait la triste annonce sur Facebook:

Il est décédé à sa résidence de Las Vegas, a indiqué le bureau de Francine Chaloult, responsable des relations publiques de la chanteuse au Québec. Le Caesars Palace de Las Vegas a annoncé par communiqué que les spectacles de Céline Dion prévus samedi et dimanche étaient annulés.

René Angélil avait subi l'ablation d'une tumeur cancéreuse à la gorge en décembre 2013, récidive d'un cancer dans la région cervicale une quinzaine d'années plus tôt.

Le 13 août 2014, Céline Dion, qui devait remonter sur scène au Caesars Palace de Las Vegas deux jours plus tard, avait d'ailleurs reporté "pour une période indéterminée" toutes ses activités professionnelles _ et même sa tournée en Asie à l'automne _ afin de prendre soin de René Angélil. La chanteuse racontait en mars 2015 que son mari n'avait plus l'usage de sa mâchoire et qu'elle s'occupait elle-même de le faire manger par un tube trois fois par jour.

Un an plus tard, en août 2015, à quelques jours de son retour sur scène à Las Vegas, Céline Dion révélait à une publication américaine que René Angélil n'en avait plus pour longtemps. Dans une entrevue émouvante, elle disait que son mari avait émis le souhait de mourir dans ses bras. Elle avait également confié avoir pris des notes lors de discussions avec lui sur ses arrangements funéraires.

En avril 1999, René Angélil avait subi une première opération pour un cancer dans la région cervicale. Après quelques semaines de radiothérapie et quatre mois de convalescence, pendant lesquels Céline Dion a annulé tous ses spectacles, il remontait en selle en septembre à Montréal pour préparer la "retraite progressive" de sa femme, en janvier 2000, avant la grande aventure de Las Vegas, en 2003.

Mais 10 ans plus tard, M. Angélil éprouvait de nouveaux ennuis de santé _ il a notamment subi l'ablation d'une tumeur cancéreuse à la gorge le 23 décembre 2013. Il avait alors choisi de prendre du recul et d'adapter son horaire personnel afin de reprendre des forces.

Le 11 juin 2014, René Angélil cède effectivement la gérance de la carrière de la star à un vieux complice et ami, Aldo Giampaolo, qui devenait aussi directeur général des Productions Feeling. M. Giampaolo était jusque-là pdg de QMI Divertissement et Sports, une filiale de Québecor responsable notamment de la gestion du nouvel amphithéâtre de Québec, un projet auquel M. Angélil était très lié.

Véritable père professionnel pour la chanteuse avant de devenir son mari, en 1994, René Angélil était passé lui-même de la chanson, avec le trio Les Baronets, au métier de gérant d'artistes, avant de "découvrir" Céline Dion en 1981. La jeune chanteuse de Charlemagne était alors âgée de 12 ans.

Un "baronet" de Villeray

Né à Montréal le 16 janvier 1942 d'un père syrien et d'une mère québécoise, René Angélil grandit dans le quartier populaire de Villeray, où il présente déjà des "spectacles" pour le voisinage. Son compagnon de jeu et de chorale d'école est un gamin du coin, un certain Pierre Labelle, futur "Baronet" puis humoriste, décédé en janvier 2000.

Élève plutôt doué, Angélil "saute" sa 7e année, ce qui n'était pas très fréquent à l'époque, et passe au collège André-Grasset, école privée située tout près de chez lui: un exploit pour ce fils de tailleur venu d'Orient. Plus tard, au collège Saint-Viateur, il rencontre le troisième "Baronet", Jean Beaulne, qui lance l'idée de créer le trio, pour rigoler. En 1961, les trois jeunes hommes, approchant la vingtaine, quittent l'école et amorcent leur carrière plutôt modestement dans les cabarets de la province.

Réalisant qu'une carrière dans la chanson ne se gagne pas sans gérant, ils engagent un comédien, Ben Kaye, pour les guider dans le merveilleux monde du spectacle. Et là, c'est bientôt la folie. En 1964, avec leur traduction du succès des Beatles "Hold Me Tight", devenu ici "C'est fou, mais c'est tout", les Baronets sont catapultés aux sommets des palmarès.

Pendant une dizaine d'années, Angélil et ses petits barons feront le tour des salles du Québec mais aussi des cabarets américains, jusqu'à Atlantic City. Après le départ de Jean Beaulne, en 1968, le trio commence à perdre du terrain. La concurrence est maintenant féroce et nombreuse côté groupes au Québec, et les succès anglophones à la sauce québécoise ne font plus autant recette.

En 1972, alors que le groupe remise définitivement ses complets-cravates, Angélil demeure à l'emploi du promoteur des Baronets depuis 10 ans, Guy Cloutier, qui lui apprend quelques ficelles qu'il ne connaissait pas déjà. Il s'occupe avec Cloutier de la carrière de Johnny Farago et d'un petit nouveau à la voix d'or, René Simard. Puis, en 1978, Ginette Reno lui demande de devenir son gérant.

Il rencontre le parolier français Eddie Marnay _ une amitié qu'il cultivera plus tard _ et participe à la "relance" de Ginette Reno avec le mégasuccès "Je ne suis qu'une chanson", de Diane Juster. Leur collaboration durera deux ans, jusqu'à ce que Mme Reno lâche Angélil pour un nouveau... gérant de mari.

Une cassette providentielle

En janvier 1981, brusquement privé de sa vedette, pratiquement sans le sou, René Angélil, alors âgé de 39 ans, broie du noir. Mais le destin se fait postier, et au milieu de factures en souffrance, il découvre dans son courrier une cassette. "Écoutez-bien ça!", l'enjoint la mère de Céline Dion. "C'est ma fille, elle a 12 ans."

Angélil dira plus tard qu'il a été ému aux larmes par la voix de la petite fille de Charlemagne, qui chantait "Ce n'était qu'un rêve", composée par sa mère et son frère. Le conte de fée s'amorce lentement, la petite Cendrillon deviendra princesse. Il demande à Eddie Marnay, lui aussi "faiseur de vedettes", de lui composer une première chanson: "La Voix du bon Dieu" se retrouvera sur un premier microsillon lancé la même année, et sur un disque de Noël.

Puis, ce sont les succès en cascades pour le duo magique: récompenses dans les festivals à l'étranger, plateau de Michel Drucker en France, rafle de Félix au gala de l'ADISQ, visite du pape au Québec _ Angélil sait placer ses pions sur le grand échiquier du succès populaire et francophone.

En 1986, alors que la fillette est devenue jeune femme de 18 ans en pleine gloire, Angélil, fin stratège, décide de la "sortir" du showbizz pendant un an et demi pour lui refaire une image _ dans tous les sens du terme. Elle revient l'année suivante en femme sexy _ et bilingue _ pour "Incognito", qui la propulse plus loin encore sur la planète spectacle. Le pari d'Angélil porte fruit, et jusqu'à l'aube de l'an 2000, elle rafle tout sur son passage pendant une douzaine d'années.

La "retraite" que s'est imposée la chanteuse _ et son gérant _ le 1er janvier 2000 devait permettre au couple de se marier, de profiter de la vie, d'avoir un enfant et de préparer un grand coup: le mégaspectacle "A New Day..." à Las Vegas, avec le concours du très "Cirque du Soleil" Franco Dragone, présenté pendant près de cinq ans, à compter de 2003, dans la mecque du showbizz américain.

Pendant toutes ces années, et encore davantage récemment, Angélil était aussi connu pour ses tentatives de "contrôler le message" sur Céline Dion dans les médias _ il a déjà réussi à "tuer la une" d'un magazine de Québecor.

Le couple a eu trois enfants: René-Charles, né en 2001, et les jumeaux Nelson (comme dans Mandela) et Eddy (comme dans Marnay) en 2010. René Angélil est aussi le père de trois enfants nés d'unions précédentes, notamment avec la chanteuse Anne Renée dans les années 1970.
