Uber et Airbnb peuvent coûter cher en cas d'accident ou d'incendie

Près d'un Québécois sur deux qui s'est servi de son véhicule pour transporter des passagers notamment avec Uber ou qui a loué sa maison sur Airbnb pour arrondir ses fins de mois a omis d'aviser son assureur de la situation, indique un nouveau sondage réalisé pour la Chambre d'assurance de dommages. Une omission qui pourrait coûter cher en cas d'accident ou d'incendie.

Le coup de sonde de la Chambre, effectué par la firme Léger, révèle que plus du quart des personnes _ 27 pour cent d'entre elles _ qui ont servi de conducteur contre rémunération ou offert leur résidence en location ont subi un sinistre.

Bref, des voitures accidentées ou des dégâts d'eau qui ne seront pas forcément indemnisés par l'assureur, s'il n'avait pas été avisé que de telles activités s'y déroulaient.

Ce qui est pourtant le cas de 44 pour cent de ceux qui ont expérimenté l'économie de partage: ils ont omis d'avertir leur compagnie d'assurance, est-il indiqué dans le sondage.

L'assureur peut alors soit indemniser en partie seulement ou au pire, pas du tout, indique de son côté le Bureau d'assurance du Canada (BAC) dans un récent communiqué.

L'économie dite de partage est en plein essor et est surtout populaire chez les plus jeunes, soit les 18 à 24 ans. Plus d'un répondant sur cinq (21 pour cent) de cette tranche d'âge a déjà expérimenté cette pratique, comparativement à 13 pour cent chez les 25 à 34 ans, est-il indiqué dans le sondage.

La Chambre d'assurance de dommages avertit que dès qu'un changement survient dans l'utilisation de la résidence ou du véhicule, il faut contacter son agent ou son courtier.

Ce faisant, les gens peuvent éviter bien des ennuis, indique-t-elle.

Car un assureur pourrait refuser de payer une réclamation qui serait le résultat d'un "usage commercial" d'un véhicule personnel qui n'a pas été déclaré à l'assureur. C'est le cas par exemple du transport de passagers contre rémunération.

"Bien que cette pratique fasse beaucoup parler d'elle, elle n'en demeure pas moins exclue du contrat d'assurance automobile des particuliers au Québec. La même exclusion s'applique d'ailleurs à la location de son véhicule à un particulier", explique Line Crevier, responsable des affaires techniques au BAC.

Mais si l'assureur est avisé à l'avance d'un risque supplémentaire, il peut augmenter la prime et paiera les dommages si la voiture est accidentée ou si la maison subit un incendie.

Les gens oublient de déclarer qu'ils mettent leur logement en location ou encore qu'ils travaillent pour Uber, mais parfois, ils l'omettent volontairement car ils ont peur de la facture associée à cette déclaration.

"Certains consommateurs craignent une hausse de prime s'ils déclarent des activités liées à l'économie de partage, mais en cas de sinistre, ils éviteront beaucoup d'ennuis s'ils ont avisé au préalable leur représentant en assurances", souligne Maya Raic, présidente-directrice générale de la Chambre.

Celle-ci avertit aussi que près de trois personnes sur cinq (57 pour cent) ne font pas réévaluer la valeur de leurs biens à l'approche de leur renouvellement d'assurance, malgré tous les achats effectués en cours d'année.

La Chambre de l'assurance de dommages a pour mission d'assurer la protection du public en matière d'assurance de dommages et veille à la formation continue obligatoire de plus de 14 500 agents et courtiers en assurance de dommages, ainsi que d'experts en sinistre.

Le sondage a été réalisé du 16 au 18 mai 2016 auprès de 1004 Québécois adultes. Pour être admissibles à répondre au sondage, ceux-ci devaient posséder une assurance habitation ou une assurance automobile et en être responsables ou coresponsables. Au total, 847 Québécois correspondaient à ces deux critères, indique la Chambre.
