La crise du logement à Vancouver encourage des propriétaires à proposer des chambres à louer bon marché ou même gratuites en échange de faveurs sexuelles.

Les annonces apparaissent notamment en ligne sur le site Craigslist dans la catégorie location immobilière : « Besoin d'une personne pour m'aider dans les tâches à la maison et pour massages, dit une de ces annonces. Une femme de préférence. En retour, elle aura sa propre chambre dans une maison lumineuse. »

La porte-parole du refuge pour femmes Rape Relief, Samantha Grey, déplore le fait que des gens exploitent de jeunes femmes en difficulté financière ou des immigrantes qui ne parlent pas bien anglais.

Elle trouve que la police devrait s'attaquer à ces annonces qui s'apparentent à de la prostitution. En effet, dit-elle, les propriétaires achètent des faveurs sexuelles avec un logement et non pas de l'argent.

« Si la police de Vancouver suivait la loi, ils pourraient arrêter ces hommes qui sollicitent du sexe, » affirme Mme Grey, car il est illégal au Canada de payer quelqu'un en échange de faveurs sexuelles.
