“Love Jones: The Musical” kicked off its national tour with a star-studded cast including Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Marsha Ambrosius, MC Lyte, Raheem DeVaughn and Dave Hollister. The theatrical production is based off of the 1997 film, “Love Jones” which follows two lovers who attempt to figure out if their kinship is a one-time thing or something more.

But as the classic film, which is approaching its 20th anniversary, gets adapted into a two hour and fifteen minute musical, here’s five things you should know before getting a ticket.

1). There’s no dialogue or poetry from the original film or music from the soundtrack in the musical. Instead of a exact replica of “Love Jones,” the musical captures the essence of the original but reimagines the classic love tale with a new cast.

2). Although the musical doesn’t have spoken word classics like Lovehall’s “Brother to the Night (A Blues for Nina),” it makes up for it with a ton of R&B tunes from the stellar cast’s discography. (Although Ambrosius only makes one appearance, it’s certainly a standout performance.)

3). Due to previous obligations, not all of the artists will be there for every date scheduled. It would be best to check ahead of time to see if your favorite artist will be belting out on stage in your city.

4). While the original film starred 20-somethings, Larenz Tate and Nia Long, the musical stars veterans in the music industry, Tony Grant and Chrisette Michele, for the roles of the main couple, Darius Lovehall and Nina Mosley, respectively.

5). Despite all of its differences, there are a few classic scenes and nods to the original film. Not to mention, aforementioned characters like Nina and Darius show up. But that’s not all. Fan favorites like Hollywood (who was originally played by Bill Bellamy) also show up in the musical.

“Love Jones: The Musical” is currently running to Dec. 4. Ticket information, including tour dates can be found here as well as through Groupon.
