Some great news for all you #LatinoLit fans... (this just in.)

A new anthology featuring 21st-Century Latino/a writers and artists helps imagine a our past, present, and future. Latin@ Rising: An Anthology of Latin@ Science Fiction and Fantasy, published by Wings Press, will come out in February 2017. The book’s editor, Matthew David Goodwin, successfully used Kickstarter to publicize the book and pay writers and artists for their contributions.

There are rich alternate traditions of speculative fiction both within and outside the United States, as many groundbreaking speculative fiction anthologies have shown: Dark Matter, Cosmos Latinos, So Long Been Dreaming, Three Messages and a Warning, Mothership, and Long Hidden. Latin@ Rising joins this cadre of anthologies to expand readers’ perceptions of speculative fiction. By showing the breadth of genres being used by U.S. Latino/a authors and artists, Latin@ Rising also helps expand the notion of what U.S. Latino/a literature and art entails.

The 23 authors and artists included in this anthology come from all over the U.S. and from eight different national traditions. They include well-known creators, such as Kathleen Alcalá, Ana Castillo, Junot Diaz, Daniel Jose Older, and Giannina Braschi, as well as new voices, such as Alejandra Sanchez and Richie Narvaez, well worth hearing.

Goodwin, who teaches Latino/a literature at the University of Puerto Rico in Cayey, writes in his introduction: "In his essay 'Racism and Science Fiction,' Samuel R. Delany warns against the use of narrow categories like 'African-American science fiction.' The separateness which such categories enact is congruent with the separateness of racism, as he puts it clearly '... what racism as a system does is isolate and segregate the people of one race, or group, or ethnos from another.' ... What we hope to do in this anthology is to counter the separateness of Latin@ science fiction and fantasy by presenting a thrilling multiplicity of writers and stories, and by demonstrating that these writers have been part of the genres all along."

Advance praise

Latin@ Rising challenges the stereotype of Latin@s only writing magical realism in the best possible way: with a gorgeous mix of stories, poems and art exploring a wise array of styles and experiences. Matthew David Goodwin has carefully curated a blend of original and previously published material guaranteed to inspire wonder and thought. A must read!”— Julia Rios, editor of The Year’s Best YA Speculative Fiction (2013) and Kaleidoscope: Diverse YA Science Fiction and Fantasy Stories

“On the train. At home alone. In the classroom. Out loud with feeling. In dialogue with others. For aesthetic pleasure. For self-enlightenment. To escape. To encounter. To learn. To be transformed. Read this vital book.”— Seo-Young Chu, CUNY Queens College, author of Do Metaphors Dream of Literal Sleep? A Science-Fictional Theory of Representation.
