No matter how well you maintain a machine, hitches and breakdowns still occur occasionally. Air conditioners are not exempted when it comes to these hitches and that is where air conditioning repair comes in. Though most people rush to technicians, it is possible to repair some issues at home quite easily and save money while you are at it.

Air conditioning problems and their solutions.

  • Central air conditioner that has failed and it doesn’t switch on when the thermostat indicates the need for cooling. Repair by first setting the thermostat to cool and the temperature very low then inspect your electrical panel to see if the fuse has blown or the breaker has tripped and offset the issue.
  • With time wires are corroded, the fan and compressor also age, and therefore cause failures so have them replaced as soon as possible to cut down on costs.
  • The sensor or thermostat can cause problems if it’s not positioned properly. It is supposed to be near the coil but not touching it so always check it first when the air conditioner behaves funny.
  • Low Refrigerant levels slow down the air conditioner. Check for leaks in the pipes and have the pipes repaired and the refrigerant refilled to optimum levels.
  • Blocked drainages are also very common especially on days that are hot and humid. Ensure the water is draining properly and if the blockage is severe get a professional to unblock it.
  • Check furnace filters and all registers to ensure they are clean and clear as they could be clogged causing the air conditioner to produce little or no cold air. Change the filters if need be and keep registers open and if the problem still persists, run the blower for about 30 minutes with the thermostat set at “off” and the fan switch at “on”.
  • Replace the contactor at least every five years as they wear out and start performing dismally. One also needs to replace the fan motor and you don’t have to hire someone to replace these two. Just unscrew the contactor then remove the wires and put them into the new unit. For the fan motor, mark the up sides then unscrew it and fix the new motor while ensuring the wires are secured by zip ties to prevent the blades from cutting them.

Air conditioning repairs should be done quickly but take care and have the power off to avoid electric shocks and if you are not sure about fixing a problem yourself, call experts to avoid additional problems that could incur more costs.

Also consider Hiring a professional air conditioner service company will ensure you AC serves you for long as they will inspect the regular culprits and fix problems before they spin out of control. Just like all machines, air conditioners wear out with time and they might need replacements. Also doing frequent servicing allows you to plan for these replacements, as they can be expensive depending on the type of AC.
