Former Rep. Dave Trott (R-Mich.) has lifted the lid on how current House Republicans really feel during President Donald Trump’s second term.

And... it’s not great.

“Members I have kept in touch with are miserable, and the deplorable state of affairs in our Capitol today is certainly a driving factor behind many recent lawmakers’ resignations,” he wrote in an op-ed for The Daily Beast published on Tuesday. Read the full op-ed at The Daily Beast.

Firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) announced she was quitting Congress last week amid a split with Trump over multiple issues, and a senior House Republican this week reportedly predicted that “more explosive early resignations are coming.”

Congress was “completely dysfunctional” when Trott served from 2015 to 2019, the majority of which was Trump’s first term, he wrote.

But it’s only “gotten worse” and “more toxic” with the focus now being solely on “beating the other party” and “playing the blame game,” he said.

Trott slammed Trump as “King Donald” for his use of executive orders and clarified: “Let’s be clear, Trump’s executive branch is being run by a bunch of sycophants, felons and idiots.”
