Dodgeball Record: Thousands Attempt To Break Dodgeball Record In Utah (VIDEO)

This is certainly the biggest game of pseudo dodgeball we've ever seen.

Last Saturday more than 4,000 people gathered in Thanksgiving Point, Utah to break the Guinness World Record for largest dodgeball game. The participants split up into two teams, red and blue, and proceeded to attempt to pelt each other with roughly 750 balls. The participants appeared to be having a blast and the event was for a good cause--raising money for Camp Kesem, which is a charity designed for children of cancer patients.

According to the description on the Youtube video of the event, 3,975 people there signed waivers to participate, but hundreds of others joined in.

Their record, while valiant, stood undisputed for a grand total of three days.

On Wednesday, students at UC Irvine gathered and held a game of dodgeball with an official tally of 4,488 participants.

But before arguments begin over who holds the record, perhaps it should be noted that according to the National Amateur Dodgeball Association (which is a real thing), the maximum amount of players that can participate during an official game of dodgeball is 6 on each side.

While these events are most definitely in the running for the world record for largest group of people indiscriminately throwing rubber balls at one another, whether this qualifies as dodgeball is questionable. It appeared that few of the participants were even practicing the five D's of dodgeball as outlined by the legendary Patches O'Houlihan: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge.

We compliment UC Irvine and our friends in Utah on their noble effort, but as the movie Dodgeball states, "Dodgeball is a sport of violence, exclusion, and degradation." These festivities just looked like good-natured fun for a great cause.
