The press conference of the physicians at Parkland Memorial hospital who treated many of the officers and others injured revealed to me the level of trauma and psychological pain they endure when they see a patient’s death they cannot avert.

Like fellow officers who mourned the loss of cohorts, treating physicians showed the emotions these types of situations create. But Dr. Brian Williams, a black staff member, offered the most cogent analysis of how an American black person grapples with the reality of disproportionate police violence against blacks, and understanding the needed presence and appreciation of police who perform their duties faithfully.

It is time for America to have the conversation about race that we avoid. That it still exists is evident even to whites who want to deny it publicly. This question posed to a white audience proves that fact.

It is past the time for this conversation about race to become issue number one for America’s security. The propensity for violence as a solution ingrained in armed America is evident in the actions of Micah Williams, Dylann Roof, and countless other racially charged tragedies. The President can call for public discord daily for the balance of his term. Hillary and Donald should focus considerable time in their debate on this issue.

At your job, church, school, social media sites you enjoy; every opportunity to discuss our pain and our solutions must be taken. On a closing note, this photo will become the symbol of Black resistance to protest suppression tactics,
