Marc Jacobs & Victoria Beckham Bonded Over Louis Vuitton Bag

It involved a fake (!) Louis Vuitton bag.

We've always known Marc Jacobs and Victoria Beckham were close -- how else would he have gotten her to stuff herself into a shopping bag headfirst and pose for a picture?

But we never really knew how that friendship began. On Thursday night, Marc Jacobs told a crowd at the 92Y in New York that it all started over a bag -- a knockoff, in fact.

According to Women's Wear Daily, which attended the 92Y talk, Jacobs once saw a magazine cover with a photo of Victoria Beckham carrying a fake Louis Vuitton bag. (The Internet seems to think it's this one.) He sent over a real one instead and a friendship was born.

It's an anecdote Jacobs recounted years ago, according to Vogue UK. The designer reportedly said, "When we did the graffiti bags with Stephen Sprouse there was a cover of a British newspaper with Posh Spice wearing a counterfeit one. As soon as it was produced, we sent her a real one. I hardly dreamed that my ultimate goal would be to have Posh Spice carrying a Louis Vuitton handbag. It was kind of funny."

Which sounds like a harsh way to describe one of your best friends, but hey, that was 2005. Victoria was still super tan, still had her breast implants and was still referred to as Posh Spice -- in other words, a long way away from the sleek fashion icon and Marc Jacobs BFF we know today.
