Coming home from Afghanistan for the birth of our second child.

November is a time to be thankful for all we have and appreciate America’s quiet heroes, our military families. Since my tenth great-grandfather William Bradford, Governor of the Pilgrims, came to America on the Mayflower, America has come a long way. We didn’t get where we are today because of one person, we got here through the hard work and perseverance of many.

As a Nation, we are defined by the latin phrase E pluribus unum - out of many, one. This phrase couldn’t be more true. Nations don’t rise to greatness alone; it is through the collective work of many that nations rise. The same can be said for individuals. No one person is singularly successful, they have become successful because they have talent, initiative, and drive but they also have people who surround and support them and empower them to achieve greatness. As General (R) Ray Odierno said, “The strength of our Nation is our Army; the strength of our Army is our Soldiers; the strength of our Soldiers is our Families. This is what makes us Army Strong." America’s strength is rooted in the collective support military families provide for our Soldiers and our Nation.

Military families endure challenges those outside the military do not encounter, like moving 10x more than the average person. Consequently, the majority of military families live in a single-income household, making it very difficult to meet regular household financial obligations. The strain of moving on a regular basis and not knowing whether a job will be available at the next duty station puts strain on the individual and the military family.

Our Nation’s Service Members are strong, resilient and incredible leaders and we trust them with preserving our Nation’s freedom. These Service Members are supported and surrounded by equally strong and resilient family members. Without military families we wouldn’t be where we are today because we believe in the notion of E pluribus unum. We believe that it takes a village to raise a child. We believe in community support. We believe in helping and supporting others in times of need.
