Pete Hegseth's Trolling Of Mark Kelly Gets The Social Media Response It Deserves

Former military members referred to the secretary of defense as "a blowhard," "a complete jackass" and "a total blue falcon."

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s decision to troll Sen. Mark Kelly after the Pentagon announced on Monday it would be investigating the Arizona Democrat caused a real war of words on social media.

The Pentagon claimed Kelly’s participation and statements in a video calling for U.S. troops to refuse unlawful orders interfered with the “loyalty, morale, or good order and discipline of the armed forces.”

The announcement said that Kelly might be recalled to active duty so he can be court-martialed for his actions.

Kelly responded to the news by posting a photo of his medals, noting, “If this is meant to intimidate me and other members of Congress from doing our jobs and holding this administration accountable, it won’t work.”

When I was 22 years old, I commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and swore an oath to the Constitution. I upheld that oath through flight school, multiple deployments on the USS Midway, 39 combat missions in Operation Desert Storm, test pilot school, four space… pic.twitter.com/jMAlYEozQ6

On Tuesday, Hegseth responded to Kelly’s post by trolling him, claiming that the former U.S. Navy fighter pilot and astronaut’s medals were “out of order & rows reversed.”

Hegseth added: “When/if you are recalled to active duty, it’ll start with a uniform inspection.”

So “Captain” Kelly, not only did your sedition video intentionally undercut good order & discipline…but you can’t even display your uniform correctly.

Your medals are out of order & rows reversed. When/if you are recalled to active duty, it’ll start with a uniform inspection. https://t.co/rsSyrPcmbg

Kelly’s wife, Gabrielle Giffords, a former politician, jumped to his defense, as did many former members of the military.

Intimidation tactics are not going to keep @SenMarkKelly from his duty to protect our constitution.

My husband is a patriot. He’s served our country since he was 22 years old – no matter how dangerous the mission. That’s who he is. Proud of you, sweetie. https://t.co/zZ12iIOSQK

Should’ve kept this one in the Signal Chat, Pete. Ever heard of a picture being mirrored?

But good reminder: you’re out of your depth. https://t.co/VeGbfntwOh

Few Americans have served our nation with the dignity, courage, and patriotism of Captain Mark Kelly.

Unlike President Trump, his loyalties lie to the people and to the Constitution. https://t.co/DnW28niieW

Every person who wears the uniform swears an oath to the Constitution. Not to the President.@SenMarkKelly wore the uniform and so did I. We know the difference between lawful service and political misuse of our troops.

The Pentagon “reviewing” Mark for reminding every service…

Last time I looked the Uniform Code of Military Justice REQUIRES that an unlawful order be disobeyed. What exactly is the problem with a decorated veteran and US Senator saying that out loud?

I briefly commented to @NicolleDWallace on @SenMarkKelly awards yesterday. For those unfamiliar, several of the awards have a “V” which stands for “valor,” a heroic act in combat.
But if you want to know the real Mark Kelly, read any book about the Columbia shuttle disaster.… https://t.co/ULmn6tmCTA

To anyone who thinks it’s an “exaggeration” that the rule of law is in danger…

U.S. Senator Mark Kelly is being investigated for the “crime” of telling people not to commit crimes.

We’ve fallen far.

This is sickening.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth leaked classified information to a reporter on a signal chat (that he should not have been using in the first place) and he goes after a senator for using free speech to say something that is true. https://t.co/fhogun0649

— Rep. Jim McGovern (@RepMcGovern) November 24, 2025

That is incorrect. His medals are in order. In fact, everything pictured in his uniform is to standard.

Hegseth, stop being a little bitch ass punk and do your actual job for a change.

VetsForward veterans are calling out Pete Hegseth’s stunt targeting Sen. Mark Kelly. There’s nothing wrong or unusual our troops that under the UCMJ, they’re not just allowed to disobey unlawful orders, they’re required to. That’s the oath we all took, and we won’t let anyone… pic.twitter.com/bVsA6I64fZ

Jeff Flake, a former Republican senator from Arizona, called Kelly “a good man who has served his country honorably in the past and continues to serve honorably in the U.S. Senate.”

“I’m proud to call him my Senator,” he concluded.

Mark Kelly is a good man who has served his country honorably in the past and continues to serve honorably in the U.S.Senate. What he and his wife Gabby have sacrificed for this country is immeasurable. I’m proud to call him my Senator. https://t.co/GthOyuQgWM

Former GOP Rep. Justin Amash pointed out the chances of Kelly being prosecuted for his participation in the video are practically zero.

“We don’t live in North Korea. Anyone here can freely state that service members must refuse unlawful orders,” he said.

The chances of a successful prosecution here are zero point zero percent. Everything with this administration is performative nonsense to cater to an ever-shrinking base.

And, not surprisingly, a few former members of the military had harsh words for Hegseth.

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), a former Marine, called Hegseth a “total blue falcon,” which UrbanDictionary says is military slang for someone “who commonly fucks over their buddys” (sic).

Oh man he was that “officer” in the National Guard. Total Blue Falcon. https://t.co/9iHYTNboYa

— Ruben Gallego (@RubenGallego) November 25, 2025

Others chimed in, including Adam Kinzinger, a former Air Force officer and former GOP representative for Illinois, who called Hegseth “a blowhard who tries really hard to look tough.”

Hegseth is a blow hard who tries really hard to look tough and while he wears makeup and overthinks his arm and hands position.

Inside he’s a scared trembling boy who knows he’s an imposture. In his case it’s not a syndrome. It just is https://t.co/CWSwMnD6yx

When you draw a platoon leader like Hegseth, it’s your worst nightmare. You just ride it out until he’s gone and gets replaced by someone who isn’t a complete jackass. Only a fool like Trump would put one of them in charge of the entire defense department. pic.twitter.com/8y8YN68wn4
