At Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Sydney Sweeney presented the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie — but not before host Nate Bargatze took a jab at the recent controversy surrounding her American Eagle ad campaign.

“I forgot — I have a blue jean tux on for some reason. We had, like, a joke — there’s a cummerbund, and I forgot what it... I don’t know. All right, please welcome two-time Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney,” Bargatze said.

Sweeney walked up to announce the nominees without acknowledging the joke.

Over the summer, Sweeney’s jean ad, which played on the phrase “good genes,” was widely panned, but also garnered support from the White House.

Steven Cheung, White House communications director, weighed in on X to denounce the backlash as “cancel culture run amok.”

And President Donald Trump said that “if Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, then I think her ad is fantastic.”

The actor was not nominated for an Emmy this year.
