Sydney Sweeney is on a losing streak.
The star packed on 30 pounds to play pioneering boxer Christy Martin for the biopic “Christy,” but it got knocked out at the weekend box office.
“Christy” grossed just $1.3 million despite being released in 2,011 theaters ― which puts it among the top 10 all-time worst openings (not including re-releases) on more than 2,000 screens, according to Box Office Mojo.
But a spokesperson for the actor looked on the bright side, citing a high Rotten Tomatoes audience score. “Box office aside, this one’s a win in all the ways that matter,” the spokesperson told HuffPost in an email on Monday. “We’re so proud to back independent cinema and share a story that genuinely deserves to be seen!”
Sweeney is one of the most-talked-about actors in Hollywood but that hasn’t translated at the box office recently.
“Americana,” a 2023 crime heist film that sat on the shelf, made just $500,000 in its debut weekend this August in 1,123 theaters.
Another one of her theatrical releases, the Ron Howard-directed thriller “Eden” (2024) mustered just $1.57 million (no, the decimal point is not misplaced) in its cinema run when it was also released in U.S. theaters this August.
Sweeney’s fortunes will likely improve with the December release of the thriller “The Housemaid” co-starring Amanda Seyfried.
She is rumored to have a part in the “Devil Wears Prada” sequel, which is slated for a May release, after she was spotted on the set.
The “Anyone But You” star has been caught up in controversy of late.
An American Eagle jeans commercial featuring Sweeney and her “great jeans” had critics claiming it tiptoed around themes of white supremacy.
Upon learning that Sweeney was a registered Republican, President Donald Trump said, “If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”
On “The Late Show” last week, she raised eyebrows by admitting to skydiving just hours after barhopping all night.
“Did you show up still drunk?” host Stephen Colbert asked.
“I was a little worried stuff would come out, yeah,” the “Euphoria” star replied. “I would not be the only thing falling out of the sky.”
