A pesar de haber caído ante América en el juego de vuelta 2-1 en el estadio Nemesio Díez, Toluca se convirtió en el primer finalista del Torneo Apertura 2012, con marcador global de 3-2.
El encuentro fue muy bien jugado por parte de la escuadra americanista, sobre todo en el primer tiempo; sin embargo, Toluca corrigió en la parte complementaria y evitó que la escuadra de Miguel Herrera se saliera con la suya de dejarlos fuera.
EL JUEGO
En los primeros 45 minutos, América entendió lo que se estaba jugando, por lo que desde que empezó rodar el balón se fue encima del rival, generando oportunidades claras de gol que no lograron terminar en las redes enemigas por milagro.
Sin embargo, después de tanta presión al minuto 15 el cuadro visitante logró abrir el marcador por conducto de Miguel Layún, quien recibió un taconazo de Rubens Sambueza a la altura de la media luna para entrar con ventaja y sacar escopetazo de derecha para dejar sin oportunidad al portero Talavera.
América siguió siendo mejor, pero perdió un poco de intensidad y le dejó un poco la iniciativa al cuadro mexiquense, que por conducto de Sinha tuvo su primer arribo de peligro, el cual llegó hasta el minuto 24 dentro del área grande, pero su disparo fue tapado al final.
Todavía Toluca tuvo en los botines de Lucas Silva el poder empatar la pizarra, donde el mediocampista tomo un rebote de volea en el área americanista y con grandes reflejos el portero Moisés Muñoz sacó para salvar su meta.
Sin embargo, el juego se siguió jugando al ritmo de América, por lo que al 36' logró ampliar su ventaja con el gol del Daniel Montenegro, quien en un buen centro de Paul Aguilar por la banda derecha cabeceó para vencer a Talavera.
En los minutos finales de la primera parte, el cuadro de Miguel Herrera terminó encima, pero Toluca amontonó gente atrás y evitó que cayera el tercero en su contra.
La segunda parte inició a tambor batiente, el cuadro local salió con mayor intensidad gracias a los cambios mandados a la cancha por su timonel Enrique Meza; mientras que América no dejó de ser peligro al momento de que tuvo la pelota.
El partido se empezó a centralizar en el mediocampo, pero la escuadra toluqueña fue otra, por lo que al 59' el ingresado Édgar Benítez logró acercar a su equipo en el marcador, luego de un error de Layún, quien le regaló la pelota a Tejada en el mediocampo, que al avanzar cedió para el paraguayo, ya dentro del área grande, que definió al borde del área grande.
Ambos conjuntos continuaron muy intensos, por lo que los dos no dejaron de correr por toda la cancha; sin embargo, dejaron escapar oportunidades peligrosas, sobre todo Toluca, que por medio de Édgar Benítez, Sinha y el centroamericano Luis Tejada estuvieron muy cerca de conseguir el gol del empate.
El tiempo comenzó a ser el enemigo de América que, a pesar de adueñarse del esférico, en los minutos finales empezó a caer en el pelotazo, lo cual le facilitó el trabajo a las zagueros mexiquenses.
Al final, la escuadra azulcrema se quedó con un hombre menos, luego de la expulsión de Juan Carlos Medina por una agresión, por lo que el marcador ya no se movió y Toluca pasó a la final.
