Any health enthusiast will tell you that diet and exercise aren’t the only factors that create a sustainable and enriched life. Many of the other lifestyle factors make a big difference as well and relaxation can play a role. In fact, some of the most well-known communities of centennials (people living over 100 years old) are in highly social communities with friends and families.

The so-called “Blue Zone” regions of the world are considered some of the longest-lasting and healthiest in the world and a lot has to do with the lifestyle outside of diet and exercise.

Bonding and Socializing

Despite all the money and wealth of resources in the modern world, anxiety and depression rates are on the rise. A study of women in the U.S., Canada, and Nigeria found that the wealthiest people in the world (american women) were the unhappiest. They struggled from the most anxiety and highest rates of depression despite how much they had in material resources.

The main reason this is the case is because of a relatively low sense of community. When we are far away from friends, family, and the people we enjoy spending time with, it makes it hard to really enjoy life and remain healthy. This is what the people in “Blue Zones” have found out a long time ago.

Family is incredibly important on Sardinia, a region of Italy where many live over 100 years old. This is one of the keys to keeping a healthy and happy lifestyle according to people in Sardinia, the people living on Greek islands, and those on Okinawa near Japan.

How to Increase Social Activity on Easter

Even though Christmas seems to have far more interest among families and those who celebrate the holiday, that doesn’t mean Easter cannot be a great way to build a stronger sense of community and maintain that long-term and sustainable health. Simply grilling with smokers can be a great way to spend time with family and it doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor.

Many people wait until July 4th for the smoke outs and BBQs, but this isn’t something we need to do any longer. With plenty of family and friends available all the time, it’s best to come together over a meal and enjoy the company.

Another way that I’ve done this is through a concept known as “Intentional Dinners”. These dinners are specially curated dinners where everyone brings 5 ingredients to a house and cooks tapas style together. There is something so important about food and a sense of community. This is the way forward on Easter.
