I have been noticing all the mini storage facilities that are popping up all over America. Have you seen them? Rows of little storage units with a catchy name often next to a major road. Wherever I travel I am certain to pass multiple rental facilities where you can easily store all your excess stuff. You can rent spaces of various sizes or even choose the nice climate controlled storage units. Have you ever wondered why we are seeing all these storage units?
As I thought more about all our excess stuff that we need to store, I started to wonder if we aren't going through life comparing ourselves to others. My neighbor has a new motorcycle so I need one too. How about that nice pool table? I better get one of those too. I wouldn't want anyone to think less of me because I don't have the same stuff that everyone else does.
Eventually we all end up with way too much stuff to keep in our house and we need the services of the mini storage facilities. We have so much useless stuff that we now need to pay to store it. We not only have excess stuff, we also have a monthly storage bill to store the items we don't even need.
Do you ever compare yourself to others? Do you ever wonder why you don't have all the stuff others do? Do you wonder why you aren't as smart as someone else? Do you wonder why you aren't as handsome or pretty as other people? I think we all do. The problem with comparing yourself to others is that it only does harm to you. Why would we even think of using others as a standard of measurement or any standard to determine our worth? It makes no sense but yet we do it every day.
Here is what the bible says about these comparisons. In 2 Corinthians we find this:
Oh, don't worry; we wouldn't dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!
You see, God made you just the way you are. You are unique... a one-of-a-kind. So be yourself. Instead of using other people as your standard of measure for your worth, use the scriptures. If you measure up there, I bet you won't need the services of the mini storage facilities. I bet your life even begins to take on a different set of priorities.
Next time you drive by a mini storage facility, remember not to be tempted to compare yourself to others. Simply wave as you drive by and remember that God made you to just be you.
