When employers violate wage and occupational safety laws, they effectively devalue hard work and workers' lives. It is simply outrageous and unacceptable that a country like ours allows people to work to death.
The refineries in this country still using unnecessarily hazardous hydrofluoric acid must ensure their workers and the residents of their neighborhoods live to see Labor Day 2010.
To reduce that daily toll, to make Workers Memorial Day less memorable, the U.S. Labor Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration must be properly funded and empowered.
Some analysts are guessing that Obama, while he won't utter the words "immigration reform" in the same breath, might be more willing to tackle the issue one piece at a time.
