CFL player Maurice Price has apologized for offensive tweets he posted last month about the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team.
The Calgary Stampeders wide receiver was fined an undisclosed amount by the league for his tweets. Price said that his faith would "not allow him to accept" what happened on the weekend that Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams, and was filmed kissing his boyfriend in celebration.
He subsequently went on to say that his words were "misconstrued."
Over the weekend, Price issued an official statement through the Stampeders website:
"I apologize for the insensitive remarks I made on social media last month. I realize my comments were offensive and I sincerely apologize to the Canadian Football League, the Calgary Stampeders, my fans and especially to Michael Sam. I promise to represent the values of the Canadian Football League and the Calgary Stampeders in the future."
He also apologized at Stampeders training camp on Sunday, The Calgary Sun reported, saying, "I just want to come here and be face-to-face with you guys and not do it from a distance and just apologize ... I’m aware that my comments were offensive."
Price isn't the first CFL player to be punished for making remarks about Sam.
Arland Bruce III was fined by the CFL and later cut by the Montreal Alouettes after telling Sam to "submit to God fully" on Instagram, Yahoo! News reported.

While she said she wants to focus on her performance instead of politics, she plans to don merchandise from Principle Six, a clothing company inspired by the Olympic Committee Charter's sixth principle, which states that “any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement." The Committee confirmed this also includes sexual orientation. (credit:(Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty Images))
