JÉRUSALEM - Israël a célébré 65 ans d'indépendance mardi alors que plus d'un million d'Israéliens ont bravé la pluie et le vent pour faire la fête dans les parcs nationaux.

Lors d'une cérémonie officielle en hommage à l'armée israélienne, les leaders de l'État hébreu ont donné le coup d'envoi des festivités au son de vieux classiques de la chanson pop, tout en rappelant à leurs concitoyens qu'Israël avait encore des ennemis.

Le président Shimon Peres, qui a chanté en duo avec la chanteuse Keren Peles durant l'événement, a prévenu que le pays devait demeurer vigilant par rapport aux groupes militants basés près de ses frontières, soit le Hezbollah au Liban et le Hamas dans la bande de Gaza.

Il a également soutenu que les guerres menées par l'État hébreu par le passé étaient justes.

Le chef de l'armée israélienne, le lieutenant-général Benny Gantz, a déclaré que ses soldats continueraient à se battre pour les citoyens israéliens jusqu'à ce que la paix règne.

Plusieurs pays de la communauté internationale ont transmis leurs félicitations à Israël, dont les États-Unis.

Dans un communiqué envoyé aux médias, le président américain, Barack Obama, a assuré qu'un État hébreu libre et indépendant ne pouvait trouver meilleur allié que les États-Unis. Il a affirmé que la collaboration entre les deux pays leur permettait d'être plus forts, plus sécuritaires et plus prospères.

Les célébrations, qui ont commencé lundi soir, se déroulent une journée après le jour du Souvenir, durant lequel Israël rend hommage à ses soldats tombés au combat.
