MADRID - Le gouvernement régional indépendantiste de la Catalogne compte toujours organiser un référendum sur la sécession le 9 novembre, et cherche comment convaincre le plus haut tribunal d'Espagne d'annuler la suspension temporaire du vote.

Un porte-parole, Francesc Homs, a dit vendredi que la mission du gouvernement régional est maintenant de s'assurer de la tenue du vote. La Cour constitutionnelle a décidé lundi de suspendre les préparatifs en vue du scrutin, pendant qu'elle étudie les arguments du gouvernement espagnol qui estime que le référendum est illégal.

Le gouvernement d'Artur Mas rencontrait les leaders des partis politiques régionaux favorables au référendum pour discuter de stratégie. Les pourparlers pourraient durer une partie de la fin de semaine.

La popularité de l'indépendance est en pleine ascension en Catalogne, depuis que le gouvernement espagnol a refusé d'accorder plus de pouvoirs à la région.

Il s'agit de la plus récente poussée sécessionniste en Europe, depuis que le référendum écossais a mené à une victoire du «Non».

Jeudi, M. Mas a semblé faire fi de la décision de la Cour constitutionnelle quand il a signé un décret autorisant la formation d'un comité électoral pour superviser le référendum.

Les sondages démontrent que les Catalans sont favorables à la tenue du vote, mais qu'ils sont divisés sur la question de l'indépendance.

La Catalogne est la région la plus riche d'Espagne. Elle compte 7,5 millions d'habitants.
