D.N. Campbell was born in Chicago in 1932. He was a jazz musician from age 15, and later, a music teacher until the 1960s. He attended Southeastern Louisiana University and received his doctorate from the University of Illinois. He is the author of over 100 academic publications. His books include Silent Celebration: The Generation That Transformed America, Our Lost Language: How We Once Talked, Connecting the Dots: Life Among the Clerks, and the forthcoming fiction collection I Think the President is Dead: Stories Out of Sync.
