Seasonal changes have played a significant role in the foundation of human culture since the early days of mankind. Whether it's religion, agriculture or the calendar industry, our little blue planet's elliptical traverse around the sun is always a popular topic of conversation. Of the four cycles, winter has by far the most impact and has historically been regarded as a signifier of the end. To phrase "winter is coming" has a number of connotations.

Winter is coming.

For skiers and snowboarders, this is good news. Snow sports enthusiasts live for this time of the year and most just can't get enough. It's the reintegration of one's spirit with nature and an opportunity to experience the sensational feeling of being on top of a mountain with friends and family.

Thankfully, winter has arrived early this year for mountain resorts in North America. Blame it on La Nina, global warming or even global cooling. Whatever you're reasoning, there's no question this is going to be a record-breaking season for resorts around the world. Many mountains have already begun snowmaking operations; a lucky few have even fired up their lifts for excited skiers and snowboarders to get a sneak preview of this year's powder!

We've compiled a list of the Top 10 Resorts in North America for you to ski and snowboard today! So sharpen your edges, tighten your boots and get ready to hit the slopes.

Bonus: Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia will not officially fire up their lifts until November 24th, however, they might make an exception if you ride at the same level as pro skiers Callum Pettit, Mercedes Nicoll and Mike Douglas. These professional athletes were privileged with an exclusive first day at the resort in early October and were met with some amazing riding conditions. Rumor has it that Winter athletes Sean Petit, Sarah Burke and Rory Bushfield have all left their first tracks on the slopes of Whistler as well. The adjoining mountains of Whistler Blackcomb feature three glaciers that usually get around 430 inches of snow a year. They boast the best offering in the industry with 200 marked runs, over 8,000 acres of terrain, and 16 alpine bowls.
