On Tuesday afternoon, Barbara Walters was at the Metropolitan Club in Manhattan accepting the Fred Friendly First Amendment Award from Quinnipiac University, and recalling both a very different time in New York and the TV industry.
“When I was doing the ‘Today Show,’ I lived right across the street from Carnegie Hall, and on the street I would see the ‘ladies of the evening’ when I left at four o’clock in the morning to go into the studio,” Walters said, speaking of her status as a breaker of glass ceilings in television news. “I would be carrying a garment bag, I wasn't made up… I would look at the ladies of the evening, and they would look at me, and I gave them hope.”
