Barclays Center To Try Valet Parking For Bicycles

Valet parking comes with the territory in New York City. But it usually involves a vehicle with four wheels and lots of horsepower.

Barclays Center in Brooklyn announced it would have free valet parking for bicycles at a June 5 concert for indie band The National.

Just like drivers who drop off their cars, cyclists will get a claim check. (And the anxiety of leaving their rides with a stranger?)

The service is being provided by Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group for walkers, cyclists and public transit riders.

“We are all about making Barclays Center the most accessible and environmentally friendly venue in the city, so we are thrilled to have our guests ride their bikes to The National show," Barclays Center GM David Anderson said in a press release.

The arrangement, which could occur more frequently if successful, will also encourage more customers to travel to Barclays events by bicycle, the Wall Street Journal noted. Bicycle racks with hundreds of spaces near the arena have "stood mostly empty," WSJ wrote.

Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, promised in the release that the valets will treat concertgoers' bikes like their own.

As for gratuities, hey, this is New York.

"Tips are always welcome and are split evenly among staff," a Barclays spokesman told The Huffington Post.
