D.C. Voting Rights Activists Arrested On Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON -- District of Columbia voting rights activists were arrested Friday morning on Capitol Hill in a protest of a congressional measure that would bar the D.C. government from spending funds on abortion services.

DC Vote, the advocacy group that pushes for full and equal voting representation for the residents of the nation's capital, reports that three people were arrested, including its communications director, James Jones. WTOP reports four protesters were arrested.

Included in the group of arrested protesters was D.C. artist Adrian Parsons, who is currently more than 200 hours into a hunger strike for D.C. voting rights.

D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), D.C. Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) and D.C. Shadow Sen. Paul Strauss (D) spoke to the protesters, according to WTOP.

WJLA/ABC7 reports that about two dozen people marched and chanted "Our District, Our Money, Our Choice." Traffic on Independence Avenue was briefly disrupted but was moving again as of 12:45 p.m.

The controversial abortion rider has been the subject of previous protests, including actions on Capitol Hill that lead to the arrests of some members of the D.C. Council and D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray in April.
