La selección de Ecuador vio rota su racha de seis triunfos consecutivos como local en la eliminatoria mundialista, luego de solamente empatar a un gol contra el combinado de Argentina en el estadio Olímpico de Atahualpa; sin embargo, este resultado pone cada vez más cerca del Mundial de Brasil 2014 a ambos conjuntos.
Con el empate, la escuadra albiceleste llegó a 26 unidades, consolidándose en el liderato general; mientras que el equipo ecuatoriano sumó 21 unidades, que lo deja en solitaria en el tercer puesto.
El inicio del partido fue sorpresivo para el conjunto local, ya que una desconcentración de su portero Alexander Domínguez propiciaría el primer gol del partido (3'), luego de que el meta falló en detener un disparo de Di María de larga distancia y le dejó la pelota a Rodrigo Palacio, y en su afán de detenerlo le cometió penal.
En la jugada el silbante paraguayo Enrique Cázares le perdonó increíblemente la tarjeta roja al arquero; el encargado de ejecutarlo fue el delantero Sergio Agüero, quien sin problemas dejó la pelota en las redes.
La anotación no afectó al cuadro ecuatoriano, pues rápidamente se hizo de la pelota, siendo Jefferson Montero su mejor hombre por el costado izquierdo; sin embargo, la escuadra del timonel Reinaldo Ruena no pudo hilvanar una jugada seria de peligro.
Fue hasta el minuto 17 que Ecuador consiguió el gol del empate por medio de Segundo Castillo, quien en una falta por el sendero izquierdo, propiciada por Joao Rojas, remató centro de Walter Ayovi para mandar al fondo de la meta del portero Sergio Romero, quien nada pudo hacer para evitar la caída de su marco.
Argentina fue borrada por completo del partido en los siguientes minutos, pero la escuadra ecuatoriana no supo aprovechar su superioridad en el campo, por lo que solamente tuvo asomos por medio de Caicedo, Rojas y Montero, pero el arquero Romero costodió bien su marco sin dejar pasar nada.
El equipo de Alejandro Sabella tuvo al minuto 39 un arribo por medio de Sergio Agüero, pero esto más propiciado por la desconfianza del portero Domínguez, quien por no hablarle a su zaga permitió que el 'Kun' le remara, pero al final logró tapar la pelota.
La escuadra ecuatoriana salió a tambor batiente para el segundo periodo y en los primeros minutos generó peligro en el marco argentino, pero Joao Rojas dentro del área chica por el costado derecho desperdició una clara, luego de sacar un disparo sobre la humanidad de Romero.
Argentina buscó manejar el contragolpe como su mejor arma, buscando aprovechar servicios largo para Palacio, Banega y Agüero, pero Ecuador no le prestó mucho la pelota en los primeros 15 minutos de la parte complementaria.
El cuadro albiceleste no logró quitarse la presión de los locales; sin embargo, el resultado continuó sin moverse.
Con la entrada del astro argentino Lionel Messi, el equipo visitante comenzó a equilibrar las acciones, por lo que ahora el partido se jugó en el mediocampo.
Ya con los dos equipos abiertos, fue un ir y venir en ambas porterías, pero fue Argentina el que se perdió las más claras, las cuales estuvieron a cargo de Ángel Di María y Lionel Messi, donde sus disparos estuvieron muy cerca de quedarse en las redes enemigas.
En los minutos finales, Javier Mascherano se hizo expulsar (87') cuando era retirado del terreno de juego, luego de un problema con un camillero al soltarle una patada; sin embargo, con la presión de los ecuatorianos, Argentina se afianzó en su zona baja y no dejó que el marcador se moviera, por lo que el empate a un gol quedó sentenciado.
