Each year, millions of Americans join a gym or health club aiming to get strong, lose weight and stay healthy. But when it comes to actually exercising, many members go AWOL.
Of the 50.2 million people who belong to a health club in the U.S., about 62% visited fewer than 100 times a year, according to data compiled in January by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, a Boston-based trade group that represents nearly 9,000 clubs.
