House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday recalled the “strangest thing ever” that happened during his recent meeting with President Donald Trump.

Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) joined the president earlier this week to talk federal funding ahead of a looming government shutdown, which has now begun.

And Jeffries recalled how a pair of hats emblazoned with “Trump 2028” just “randomly appeared” during the meeting. Trump later attempted to troll the Democrats by sharing photographs of the duo, with the caps in frame, online.

Jeffries said that, contrary to some reports, Trump “did not try to hand” the hats to himself and Schumer.

“They just randomly appeared in the middle of the meeting on the desk. It was the strangest thing ever,” he remembered.

“And I just looked at the hat, looked at [Vice President] JD Vance, who was seated to my left, and said, ‘Don’t you got a problem with this?’ and he said, ‘No comment.’ And that was the end of it.”

Trump has taken to using the merch that boosts his talk of unconstitutionally remaining in office to troll rivals, with California Gov. Gavin Newson revealing this summer that the president’s “folks keeping send me” the caps.
