Okay I’ll say it... Donald Trump is a racist, misogynistic air head that is not fit to be the leader of this country. And Hillary Clinton is a selfish, misguided liar that will say or do anything to win this election. Yet it is almost a certainty that one of the two will be the next president of the United States. So how is it that two people that are disliked by the majority of the public population are the only two legitimate contenders for this election? Well, a large part of the problem is increasing bipartisan polarization. Which essentially means that the vast majority of the population identifies as either a Democrat or Republican. And how can they not? The media rarely has coverage of third party candidates, and even the debates are structured to include just two candidates.

But let’s ignore all of that for just a second... Because there is an even bigger issue here. See, the President of the United States is supposed to transcend American values. Children should be able to look up to the President of the United States as a role model. American citizens are supposed to choose their candidate based on who they believe will best represent and serve the country for the next four years. Now I’m going to give the citizens of our country the benefit of the doubt here in stating that the vast majority of the population does not actually believe either Donald or Hillary is the type of person they strive to be. My point is this, our country’s willingness to elect a leader that is clearly lacking in morals and basic American values is a reflection of the current population. As harsh as that may sound, we have to confront the realities that this election has presented us.

Americans today have become so obsessed with promoting their own agenda that they are willing to blindly follow whichever candidates receive the Republican or Democratic nominations. The truth is that there is a plethora of information regarding the dishonesty and misconduct of each candidate, and it’s impossible to miss. Hillary supporters are quick to post the latest Trump scandal to social media and condemn all his evil followers. And Trump supporters love to point out all the times when Hillary has lied and contradicted herself over the years. All the information is right in front of us... So can we please all just admit to ourselves that neither one is fit to be the president of this country?

I do believe that the United States has the stability to make it through the next four years regardless of who becomes the next president. But this is a slippery slope. The citizens of our country are choosing their candidates based on party alliance and hatred for an opposing group of people, and if this does not change the future could be quite grim. Regardless of this election I hope that it serves as a lesson in history for our citizens and keeps us from replicating the mistakes we have made during this cycle.
