En un partido de ida y vuelta llevado a cabo en la Arena Amazonia, y con un gol de Mario Balotelli que terminó por ser el de la diferencia, el combinado de Italia sacó la experiencia y consiguió una importante victoria sobre el joven conjunto de Inglaterra por 2-1.
Este encuentro ha sido uno de los mejores que se ha jugado hasta el momento, ya que ambos conjuntos no dejaron de correr durante todo el cotejo, pero el final la escuadra Azurra impuso su experiencia y se llevó su primer triunfo de esta Copa del Mundo.
Al término de la primera jornada del Grupo D, Costa Rica e Italia encabezan el sector con tres puntos, dejando a Inglaterra y Uruguay en el fondo sin unidades. Los próximos partidos serán italianos contra costarricenses e ingleses contra uruguayos.
Desde el silbatazo inicial ambas selecciones no se dieron tregua y se fueron con todo en busca de la portería enemiga, por el lado italiano comenzaron a tratar mejor el balón y a tenerlo más tiempo, mientras que por el lado inglés fueron más prácticos a la hora de llegar al marco rival.
Andrea Pirlo fue el hombre importante de la Azurra, pero no logró darle profundidad a los ataques de su escuadra, todo lo contrario del joven de 19 años Raheem Sterling, que con sus arribos y disparos de larga distancia puso a trabajar en demasía al portero Sirigu.
Pero fue Italia el que pudo abrir el marcador al minuto 35 por medio de un tiro de larga distancia que salió de los botines de Marchisio, quien aprovechó una gran pantalla de Pirlo para sacar escopetazo de derecha fuera del área grande para dejar la pelota en las redes.
Sin embargo, el gusto les duró poco a los italianos, pues dos minutos después (37) Inglaterra en una gran jugada logró el empate por conducto de Sturridge, quien logró rematar un centro por el sector derecho de Rooney de botepronto para dejar el esférico en el fondo y sin oportunidad al portero.
Al final de la primera mitad, Italia terminó mejor, pues tuvo dos oportunidades que lo pudieron haber mandado al descanso con la ventaja, luego de que la zaga sacó de la raya un tiro bombeado de Balotelli y el poste derecho vio cómo se estrelló un balón de Antonio Candreva.
Inglaterra salió con mayor decisión para el segundo periodo, y de nueva cuenta fue el joven Sterling que puso de cabeza a la zaga italiana con fuerte disparo de larga distancia, pero el portero Sirigu con buen lance evitó la anotación.
Pero al minuto 50 Italia respondió, pero con su segundo gol por medio de Balotelli, quien de cabeza remató un centro exacto de Candreva por la banda derecha, en la que el delantero solamente tuvo que picar la pelota para dejarla en las redes.
La escuadra inglesa no dejó salir de su terreno de juego a Italia con el objetivo de igualar la pizarra, pero ni Rooney ni Sturridge ni Welbeck lograron descifrar el candado italiano, siendo el primero el que tuvo la más clara dentro del área grande al 61’ con un tiro muy cerca del poste.
El tiempo se le fue escapando a Inglaterra, teniendo llegadas pero ya sin mucha profundidad, incluso Italia todavía tuvo, por medio de Pirlo, un chance, luego de que el veterano jugador estrelló un balón en el poste al final, pero el marcador ya no se movió.
