A fall from a loft bed at a Fordham University dorm left Kei Usami paralyzed from the neck down.
Usami fell about four feet from the elevated bed provided by the New York school in February, and now the former tennis player is suing the school for not putting up guardrails, according to a report by the New York Post.
The incident happened after the 20-year-old went out drinking; the university is alleging the student's alcohol consumption played a big role in the injury.
Usami, who played for the university's men's tennis team, is now in a wheelchair and has been undergoing physical therapy, the New York Post reports.
"He's not doing well yet," Karl Usami, the student's father, told the Daily Mail. "His right hand side is still completely paralyzed."
The medical bills total more than $1 million.
"I asked [the university] to extend support and help, but I didn't get a reaction," Karl told the Daily Mail.
Fordham University is a Jesuit college located in the Bronx borough of New York City.
