A Hialeah High School English teacher is without a job after he allegedly punched an underaged girl who refused his sexual advances.
Manuel Cruz, 53, allegedly carried on a brief affair with the 17-year-old, who was not a student at the school, NBC6 reports.
Cruz reportedly met the girl at his apartment complex December 9, and had sex with her once. The following week, she returned to the teacher's home.
On that occasion, Cruz drank three Scotch drinks as the two smoked marijuana, according to CBS Miami. But when she declined to have sex, he reportedly became enraged and knocked her out with a punch.
Cruz confessed to both the assault and the previous sexual encounter after being arrested later that day, CBS reports, blaming the alcohol for causing him to strike the girl.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools confirmed to HuffPost that Cruz resigned from his position at Hialeah High. He faces charges of simple battery and statutory rape.
