Mexico Dead Fish: Tens Of Thousands Of Carp And Bream Die In Reservoir (PHOTOS)

LOOK: More Than 10,000 Dead Fish From Cattle Plant Contamination

After tens of thousands of dead fish appeared in a reservoir in Mexico, a local mayor is pointing fingers at a cattle food plant.

The fish were reportedly asphyxiated after a cattle food plant poured hundreds of liters of molasses into the canal that feeds the Hurtado reservoir, Emeterio Corona, the mayor of the nearby town Acatlan de Juarez, told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The cattle food plant, which reportedly operated without a permit, creates the viscous brown substance as a byproduct while refining sugarcane and beets for cows to eat, according the report.

On Monday, fishermen used nets to remove the dead carp and bream from the lagoon, which is located in the state of Jalisco in western Mexico.

The incident also endangers about 180 families whose livelihoods depend on catching fish in the area, the BBC notes.
