Michael Sullivan, Chicago Grandfather On His Way To Job Of 30 Years, Shot Dead On Sidewalk

A Chicago family is devastated and looking for answers after their loved one, a 53-year-old grandfather, was shot and killed Tuesday night while walking to his job of more than three decades.

Michael Sullivan was making his way through East Garfield Park to his job as a UPS parcel sorter around 11 p.m. Tuesday when a car pulled up alongside him and opened fire, ABC Chicago reports.

Sullivan is seen in surveillance footage (embedded) walking along the 4200 block of West Lake Street near the CTA Green Line. A car is seen driving next to him, prompting Sullivan to look over his shoulder. Seconds later, Sullivan is shot in the head.

"I want my dad back,” Sullivan’s adult daughter, Latoya Griffin, told CBS Chicago. “There’s nothing else I can say. It hurts. It hurts so bad!”

“He was going to work," Griffin added. "He didn’t hurt nobody. All he wanted to do was go to work and help take care of my grandma.”

Police say the motive appears to be robbery. Sullivan's younger brother, Fredrick, told DNAinfo Chicago, "Knowing the neighborhood, it had to be a robbery. It's the only thing it could've been."

"He was never in a gang, didn't drink, didn't smoke, never used drugs — none of those things," Frederick Sullivan said, noting his brother was on dialysis for kidney problems.

Family said Sullivan, who had recently become a grandfather for the second time, was just one month from retiring from his UPS job, which he held for 32 years, according to DNAinfo.

Police are investigating but have not released any details on a suspect. In the meantime, family is pleading with anyone who has knowledge of the crime to come forward.

“Call your alderman, anybody, just let someone know," Frederick Sullivan said. "Please from the bottom of my heart. Please. We lost a good one today.”
