It’s common sense that to get the best design, you need to spend the most money. Or is it? The interior design experts at Laurel & Wolf wanted to test this theory, so they devised an experiment. They tasked designer Carolynne Kelly with assembling three different style boards of the same bedroom, but for three separate budgets: $2,000, $5,000, and $10,000. This is what she came up with:

For $2,000:

For a measly $2,000, Carolynne was still able to create a chic space by allocating her budget wisely and not spending too much on any one thing. “Make sure to focus on a clear distribution of budget!” she advises. “Don’t spend half of your money on a dresser. Make sure everything falls under the same line of style, quality and price.” She managed to achieve chic on the cheap by using bold color and pattern in textiles and artwork which she says “provides this space with depth and dimension.”

For $5,000:

Though more than double the $2,000 budget, $5,000 is still on the thin side. Still though, it allows for a bit more freedom with thoughtful splurging. “Mid-line budgets give us a little room for splurging!” says Carolyn. “Got your eye on a fabulous, but a bit expensive area rug? Make room for it!” In this style board, for example, Carolynne indulged in glimmering gold accents and a statement bohemian chandelier.

For $10,000:

While a $10,000 budget might be unrealistic for some, it’s still fun to dream! A beefy budget enables extravagant artwork choices and buying a luxurious rug. “The large scale artwork draws your eye up towards the high ceilings, while the bold patterned kilim area rug grounds the look with all of its vintage charm,” Carolynne says.
