Whether it's an architectural marvel or intense physical challenge, there's something about the drama of a staircase that always manages to impress. They are also a universal technology, employed over the millennia by basically every culture on earth -- very few peoples managed to go straight to the escalator. This means that from the curled staircase designed by Michelangelo to the innards of the Statue of Liberty, staircases have been at the center of art and tourist attractions since time immemorial.

Here is a tour of stairs to remember. Stairs you get to sit on only if you behave extremely well. Just remember: no sliding down the banister!
