Spielberg Breaks Ground In New Film, Takes On A Classic

One of the most beloved characters in Europe -- he even has his own museum in Brussels -- Tintin has largely been relegated to cult status in the United States.

That just may change come November.

The classic comic and cartoon, authored by Belgian artist Hergé, is taking on new life in a new, state-of-the-art motion capture film directed by Steven Spielberg. Starring Jamie Bell as the ever-young, adventure-prone journalist, "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of The Unicorn" traces the legacy of a mysterious piece of parchment and the henchman who are trying to find it before the boy hero.

Teaming up with his loyal dog Snowy and new friend Captain Haddock, Tintin meets a famous cast of characters on the way, including detectives played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and a former pirate played by Daniel Craig.

Sadly, Palle Huld, the actor who inspired the original character, died last year.

The film uses advanced motion capture technology, the next step in Spielberg's long legacy of special effects pioneering. It is his first animated film, though not traditionally fitting the full definition of the genre, and is due out in November.
