Today we are a country so divided, yet so united, as each side has come together with a stalwart passion. The presidential election has brought out the best and worst in our country. It has made us care about our future more than ever. And the world is watching.

They are watching, (and unfortunately laughing at us) and waiting. Waiting to see how the balance tips and how our country reacts.

Will the “losers” react with fear and divide the country?

Or will both sides rise up and work side by side, like grown ups do.

“You’re going to meet people in life who you don’t like and they don’t like you. You’re going to disagree, so you need to learn how to get along, work side-by-side and figure it out.”

Most of you who are parents have said this to your children. We’ve heard it ourselves. How many times have you wished that annoying co-worker would go away? Not show up one day. Disappear. Of course as fate works out, you get assigned to work together on a project. Some of you take a deep breath in these situations and make lemonade out of lemons. Perhaps you find common ground or become friends in the end. The others in this situation, well, you dig in your heels, don’t budge, remain “right” and don’t move forward.

This is where we are today. We’re about to be assigned a big project to work on together. Now it is time for the grown ups to play nice in the sandbox and not throw sand in each other’s eyes when it’s tempting - verbally, emotionally and yes, physically for some.

The other day, a friend brought the following inspirational video to my attention. It’s called “All In” and it was written and created by a teacher at her child’s school, Aram Rubenstein-Gillis, in honor of National Bullying Prevention Month (October). It is a call-to-action to stand up against bullying and celebrate diversity, perseverance and the importance of working together. The lyrics resonated with me as I look at our country moving forward…

We take the Strong ones. And the Quiet ones. And the Lost ones. And the Wild ones. We take the Brave ones. And the Wise ones. We bring in Everyone. ‘Cause in the long run, it’s only when we stick together that we all can win. And the only way to work it out is go all in. We go! All in. And if we all fall down We will rise up and we’ll get stronger somehow. We go! All in.

I’m so grateful the future leaders of our nation are learning this peaceful approach. Perhaps they can remind us adults along the way. Because everyone is needed. No one is better than the other. We WILL fall down along the way. But together we will rise up and be stronger.

No matter the outcome, let’s come together in the days, months and years to come.

Indivisible, for liberty and justice for all.
