At the new Fiscal Cliffs restaurant in Washington, the astounding seasonal menu highlights the vast disparity between would-be cuts to spending and enormous troves of lost revenue. A bit of background on the menu.

Take a look at the latest non-partisan CBO report. As you can see, over the last 40 years, our government has spent an average of 21 percent of GDP, while taking in only 18 percent of GDP. Countries that we consider peers generally spend between 40 and 60 percent of GDP (despite not having massive defense budgets). In fact, out of 160 countries on Earth, America is ranked near the bottom in terms of spending as a percentage of GDP. What is truly out of control is not our spending, but our lost revenue. Our country is not a waiter that you tip out at 15 percent. We remain an incredibly wealthy nation, but leave our commonwealth forever starved.

Alas, your table at Fiscal Cliffs is ready. Here's your menu. Your server will be right with you. Please note, we cannot overstate how small those small plates are!
