I'm an actress. I studied Meisner at The William Esper Studio where I learned that acting is to "live truthfully under imaginary circumstances." While in acting school I worked as a Nanny. I loved my day job and always felt it was a symbiotic relationship; studying theater made me a really great Nanny because I would happily engage in the kids' imaginary worlds and they gave me a chance to practice living truthfully under imaginary circumstances daily. Kids are on an emotional roller-coaster every minute of the day and in the moment 100% of the time especially when it comes to playing pretend, so they make great "scene partners."

Now, I have kids of my own and am back to "living truthfully under imaginary circumstances" often. I try to reason with them and encourage them, motivate and not dictate; mold them into capable human beings. Hard as I try, sometimes, pretending is the only way I can get them to do just about anything that isn't their idea. I'm certain that my acting training ensures my children will never know, at least for a while.
