Harper's Bazaar fait l'histoire avec deux mannequins trans en couverture

Harper’s Bazaar Inde vient de faire l’histoire en mettant non pas un, mais deux mannequins transgenres en couverture de sa dernière édition.

Tracey Norman, le premier mannequin transgenre noir à travailler dans l’industrie et visage de Clairol, accompagnée de Geena Rocerao, mannequin américano-philippin fondatrice de la campagne Gender Proud, joignent sept autres vedettes en couverture pour l’édition « Neuf merveilles du monde » du magazine.

Selon The Cut, les couvertures ont été conçues par le directeur artistique et producteur exécutif Christopher Sollinger, qui a eu l’idée après avoir lu la publication du média sur Norman en décembre.

« Ton histoire m’a vraiment touché et beaucoup de mes amis aussi et depuis que je l’ai lue, je pensais à ce qu’on pouvait faire pour redonner à Tracey, a soutenu Sollinger à The Cut. Tout le projet est né de vouloir faire quelque chose avec Tracey. La manière dont elle a dû vivre cachée en en peur, étant une si belle femme avec tellement de talent, ça me semblait tellement pas correct. Elle est quelqu’un qui devrait être célébré. Je voulais créer une image qu’elle serait capable de regarder et qu’elle se sente fière et vue et aimée et appréciée. »

Et selon Christopher, c’est l’histoire de Tracey qui a convaincu Tyra Banks de faire partie du projet.

« Tyra est venue à New York à ses frais. Elle n’a pas besoin de faire une couverture avec neuf mannequins, pas plus que les autres mannequins, mais elle s’est sentie émue et voulait faire ce qu’elle pouvait pour rendre ça possible. »

Rocero a soutenu à Mic que ça avait été un « honneur » pour elle d’être sur la couverture, particulièrement aux côtés de Norman, qui était un mannequin à succès dans les années 70 et 80 avant qu’on découvre qu’elle était transgenre.

« Les femmes qui ont pavé la voie pour moi, comme Cossey et Norman – quand elles sont sortie du placard à l’époque, elles en ont payé le prix, a insisté Rocero. Quand j’ai déménagé à New York, elles étaient mon inspiration et ma peur en même temps. Elles représentaient que c’était possible pour moi, mais j’avais peur que ce qui leur était arrivé m’arrive aussi. »

Geena a aussi confié à Mic que la couverture lui avait donné une validation d’identité, comme enfant, elle ne voyait personne comme elle « dans les médias ou ailleurs dans l’espace commun ».

In light of recent controversy surrounding McDonald's treatment of the company's employees, one Washington franchise of the fast food chain impressively allowed transgender individuals to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. The letter read,
We respect the rights of all customers and employees. We believe all people must have access to safe and dignified bathroom facilities regardless of their gender identity or expression. Therefore, the following policy has been adopted for this restaurant at 1530 3rd Avenue ... Employees and customers may use any restroom that corresponds with and is based upon the gender identity they publicly and exclusively assert or express.
