David Eustace

Photographer, Hon Dr. of Arts, Photography, Edinburgh Napier University

David Eustace is widely respected as a photographer’s photographer. Raised in a working class area in the east end of Glasgow David left school at 16 with little qualifications. He worked in a variety of jobs including serving on minesweepers in HM Royal Navy. After leaving the Navy at 21 he became a prison officer in Glasgow’s notorious prison HM Barlinnie. His introduction to photography came later in life when, aged 27, he borrowed a camera from a friend and soon a hobby became an all-consuming passion. At 28 he hoped to return to full time education and was accepted on the strength of his portfolio to Edinburgh Napier University. He resigned the Prison Service and undertook the 3 year Bachelor of Arts degree course, graduating with distinction. David’s list of sitters reads like a Who’s Who in the world of art, cinema, music and design; Tracy Emin to Sir Peter Blake, Sophia Loren to James Earl Jones, Radiohead to Sir Paul McCartney, Lord Norman Foster to Milton Glaser. Tom Brokaw’s television series ‘Along Highway 50’ was inspired by David’s portfolio for NBC’s art based Character Project. David was the only non US citizen taking part in the project with his images being selected for the opening body of work in the accompanying publication (Chronicle). In 2011 David was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts from Edinburgh Napier University. David lives between NYC and Glasgow.
