Ryan Mitchell is currently a Ph.D. in Law candidate and Mellon Foundation Humanities Fellow at Yale University. He previously received his J.D. from Harvard Law School (2012) and his B.A. from the New School (2007), and is a member of the State Bar of California. His research focuses on public international law, legal theory, comparative law, Chinese law, and legal history. Combining these interests, his approach to international law scholarship focuses in particular on the field’s diverse historical background and contemporary influences, while also exploring competing theories and non-Western approaches to international law. His writing on Chinese law and politics similarly adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, seeking to use intellectual history to illuminate current issues, problems, positions, and projects. His writing on these topics has been accepted by publications including the Harvard International Law Journal, the Harvard Human Rights Journal, the Yale Journal of Law and Technology, the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law, the Asian Journal of Law and Society, et al. He is currently at work on a book manuscript regarding past and present Chinese conceptions of international law.
