Early Thursday morning, a 45-year-old man was struck by a car and killed at Collins Avenue and 39th Street in Miami Beach.
According to police, at 1:30 a.m., a Mercedes SUV swerved into a parking lane and struck the victim who was standing behind his own car.
Even in a state that consistently ranks high in pedestrian deaths, it has been particularly deadly for those walking and cycling in South Florida in the past three weeks.
Actor Gene Hackman, who was biking in Islamorada, was struck by a pick-up truck on January 13. Although he was airlifted to a hospital, he sustained only bumps and bruises. Others weren't so lucky.
On Sunday, a pedestrian was killed after getting hit by a truck in front of the BP gas station on LeJeune Roadd and NW 28 Street in Northwest Miami-Dade.
On December 30, a man trying to assist a family member broken down on I-95 attempted to cross the highway and was killed.
Three days earlier on December 27, a man died after being struck by not one, but three cars, in the 11400 block of Northwest 17th Avenue.
According to Transportation of America, the top for most dangerous metro areas for pedestrians are in Florida with South Florida ranking fourth.
UPDATE: The driver of the Mercedes SUV that killed a pedestrian on Collins Avenue Thursday morning turned out to be Brazilian race car driver J.P. Mauro. The The 20-year-old is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at the time of the accident. Watch the below NBC report.
