Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) revealed Monday that someone fired gunshots near her Mississippi home over the weekend and that law enforcement authorities are investigating.
“An incident involving a shooting occurred near the home of Senator Hyde-Smith early Sunday afternoon,” her office tweeted. “The Senator and her family were not harmed. Senator Hyde-Smith is grateful for the concern shown by many and the good work of federal, state, and local law enforcement.”
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is investigating the incident, spokesperson Bailey Martin confirmed to HuffPost.
“The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), along with federal and local law enforcement agencies, are investigating a shooting that occurred around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, October 22nd, near the home of Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith in Lincoln County,” Martin said. “No injuries have been reported.”
“Due to this being an open and ongoing investigation, no further comment will be made by MBI at this time,” she said.
Some local reporting offered more details. The gunshots reportedly came from a 9 mm weapon, according to Mississippi Today, a local nonprofit news outlet. According to the report, the shots were fired in the general direction of Hyde-Smith’s family members as they drove a car into the driveway of the senator’s house.
HuffPost could not confirm those details with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety or the U.S. Capitol Police, which is charged with protecting members of Congress and has nationwide jurisdiction.
A Capitol Police spokesperson did confirm its involvement in the investigation, though.
“We are working with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office on this case to figure out exactly what happened, while we coordinate with the Senator’s Office to ensure her safety,” said the spokesperson.
