David Jones, Fort Lewis College Student, Killed In Campsite Shooting, Brenden Dow Ashburn Arrested

College Student Killed At Colorado Campsite

Authorities in Colorado do not know why David Jones, a 26-year-old Fort Lewis College student, was shot and killed at a campsite early Saturday morning.

La Plata County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call at around 2 a.m. Saturday that a man had been shot at a remote campsite near Durango, Colo. Authorities arrived to find Jones, 26, dead at the scene, KRQE reports.

After interviewing witnesses, Brenden Dow Ashburn, 37, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Ashburn is being held without bond, pending a first-degree murder charge, according to ABC 7.

There are no additional suspects in the case and no motive has yet been determined.

Dan Bender, a La Plata County Sheriff's office spokesman, told the Denver Post they do not believe Ashburn and Jones knew each other.

Jones was a junior at Fort Lewis, public liberal arts college with fewer than 4,000 students enrolled.

"We have notified students and sent our condolences to friends and family," Mitch Davis, spokesman for Fort Lewis College, told the Post. "We are a smaller school, and a tight-knit community, so this news really hits hard."
